Rude Awakening

Sunday morning I was sleeping peacefully in my bed. The temperature was perfect; it wasn’t too hot, wasn’t too cold. Nothing could pull me from this soft, cozy haven. That is what I thought until I heard the loud screams of the building’s fire alarm. Suddenly I found myself frantically trying to find my shoes, my keys, and my cell phone. The normal disorientation that happens when I first awaken was made worse by the constant howl in the background.

When I finally made it to the hallway, I found myself alone. There was no smoke; there was no sign of others running from their apartments. After a minute of waiting, two of my neighbors came down the stairs and we came to the conclusion that the building was not burning to the ground, but someone on the upper floor had burnt whatever it was they were cooking. We propped the front door open and then manually silenced the alarm.

While there wasn’t really a fire, it made me wonder what would have happened if there had actually been one. At this point I decided to call up a friend of mine who deals with insurance. He recommended I protect my brand new furniture and electronics with a renter’s insurance policy. I had always assumed that it would be too expensive to insure my personal belongings against fire or theft, but he showed me how cheap it would really be for me.

I always recommend a business have enough insurance to protect against the unforeseen (fire, medical, theft, lawsuit), but figured it would be too expensive for me to have it myself. As an individual, it’s good to make sure you’re not going to be financially crippled by one unfortunate event. If you own a business, in addition to the peace of mind you get from having enough coverage, you have the added bonus of being able to deduct these expenses on your taxes.

Even though I can’t personally help you decide how much coverage you should have, if you come to W.E.L. we can help you get the most out of what you choose to get. Feeling safe and secure are necessary for maintaining happiness and that’s something we understand. Give us a visit and we’ll see what we can do to help you feel at ease in these uncertain times.
